It is! (Oh No! It's Mother's Day!)

Untitled_Artwork.jpg

It’s just another Sunday morning.... Or is it?

We use it is when we talk about the date.

What date is it today, Mac?

It’s the 14th of March. Why?

Untitled_Artwork 1.jpg

Oh no! What time is it? It’s half past ten. I have to get up!

We also use it is when we talk about the time.

We can use:

  • the long form… it is

or

  • the conversational form...it’s

It’s Mother’s Day! We forgot to bring Mum her breakfast in bed! Maybe we can get her flowers. How far is it to the flower shop?

It’s about 3KM. You go on your bike.

We use it is or it's when we talk about distance too.

Look, Mac, it’s raining. I'm not cycling anywhere in that weather!

Hmmm, let me think!

The weather is also an example of when we use it is or it's.

  • It's raining.

  • It's snowing.

  • It's freezing outside.

  • It's really windy today.

  • It's very hot.

You know, we don’t have to buy her a present. We can do something for her.

Yeah, you’re right Mac! It’s an excellent idea!

Untitled_Artwork 6.jpg

Happy Mother’s Day, Mum! ….Of course we didn’t forget! We’re going to help you around the house!

You can use it’s or it is with these phrases too…

  • It’s easy to ride a bike!

  • It is difficult to go to the moon.

  • It’s nice to sit in the sun.

  • It’s dangerous to play with fire.

  • It’s hard to solve a rubix cube.

Awww! It’s so nice of you to think of me! Thank you!

Untitled_Artwork 7.jpg

OK. That was a really bad idea, Mac. It’s really difficult to be a Mum!

Zzzzzzzzz!

At the end of the day...

  • you have to do something: you must do something

  • to help around the house: help with housework

  • shop (UK English): store (US English)
